ARC–NHMRC Joint Statement on Generative AI use

This joint statement was published on 28 April 2026.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) have released updated policies on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their grants programs.

The policies provide guidance for applicants and assessors involved in the ARC’s National Competitive Grants Program and the NHMRC’s Medical Research Endowment Account grant schemes.

The policies clarify how Generative AI may be used as a support tool, while ensuring that responsibility, expert judgement and decision‑making remain with humans.

Supporting the Responsible Use of AI in Grants

The policy:

  • takes effect on 28 April 2026
  • applies to both applications and assessments for Discovery Indigenous 2027 and other scheme rounds opening thereafter
  • sets clear expectations for the appropriate use of generative AI in ARC‑funded research and assessment processes
