$24.7 million awarded for 50 new early career industry fellowship projects

Media Release

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has today announced $24.7 million in research funding for 50 new projects under the ARC Early Career Industry Fellowships scheme.

The ARC Early Career Industry Fellowships scheme offers the opportunity for early career researchers to collaborate between academic and industry settings, which is crucial to ensuring Australia’s capability in addressing industry-identified challenges.

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ute Roessner, said the Fellowships announced today will help facilitate the adoption, translation and commercialisation of Australian research over time.

‘These early career researchers will create pathways to support academic researchers in establishing careers in an industry setting, and industry-based researchers to work in a university environment, to deliver actionable outcomes for industry partners and research end-users. It is important for industry stakeholders to acknowledge the value of research and development to assure Australia’s prosperity,’ Professor Roessner said.

‘I’m proud to say that these new early career research projects will benefit the Australian community across a broad range of areas – from developing tools for accelerated vanilla bean production, and strengthening Indigenous control over cultural knowledge, to reducing greenhouse emissions produced by the food industry.’

This announcement is one of the first Industry Fellowship schemes to be approved by the ARC Board, reflecting its legislated role under new the Australian Research Council Act 2001 to oversee and approve funding recommendations. This strengthens transparency and reinforces the ARC Board’s role in guiding the strategic direction of Australia’s research investment.
