Strengthening Australia’s fire resilience: new ARC Research Hub launches

The ARC had the pleasure of attending the official launch of the ARC Research Hub for Fire Resilience Infrastructure, Assets and Safety Advancements (FRIASA) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) on 9 July 2025.

ARC CEO, Professor Ute Roessner, speaking at the official launch of the ARC Research Hub for Fire Resilience Infrastructure, Assets and Safety Advancements (FRIASA) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

Australia faces increasing fire-related challenges, with devastating bushfires, urban fire hazards and growing risks to infrastructure and communities.

This Research Hub aims to develop, manufacture and implement next generation technologies and solutions that will protect Australia’s critical infrastructure and assets against major natural and man-made fires.

By bringing together leading researchers, industry partners, and government stakeholders, the Research Hub will drive advancement in fire safety engineering, materials science, and emergency response technologies, with real-world applications including:

  • Advanced Fire Modelling & Evacuation Systems
  • Next-Generation Fire-Resistant Materials
  • Millimetre-Wave Sensors for Fire Safety Applications
  • Predictive Fire Risk Assessment Tools

ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ute Roessner, said the Research Hub represents a significant step forward in Australia’s fire resilience efforts.

“The Fire Resilience Infrastructure, Assets and Safety Advancements Research Hub brings together leading researchers, industry partners and government stakeholders to tackle one of Australia’s most urgent and complex challenges,” Professor Roessner said.

“This Hub will not only deliver practical solutions but will also help build a long-term pipeline of expertise in fire safety engineering, disaster response and materials science.”

The FRIASA Hub is expected to attract 50 students, 35 researchers, 20 research fellows and 20 research assistants.
